I was very inspired and encouraged by the art style of Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse, and Arcane to make the toon shade texture look work. Another great inspiration was Studio Ghibli, I wanted to go for a soft toon look, and for the overall vibe of the animation to have a similar fantasy and whimsical feel.
Using toon shader is a bit different than regular shaders as there is much more control over the colours, it feels more like picking a color palette for an illustration rather than texturing an asset with the aim for realism and accuracy.
This toon and simplistic look also works well with the 3D and 2D mixed animation of this project. It creates a nice blend for the 3D environment and the 2D fantastical fishes and water elements.
